About the game
Half-Life is a landmark first-person shooter developed by Valve and released in 1998. Players assume the role of Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist who arrives late for work at the Black Mesa Research Facility and becomes caught in the middle of a catastrophic experiment gone wrong. A routine anti-matter test opens a portal to the alien dimension Xen, flooding the facility with extraterrestrial creatures and triggering a military cover-up operation.
What sets Half-Life apart from its contemporaries is its seamless narrative delivery. Valve abandoned traditional cutscenes in favor of continuous, uninterrupted gameplay where the story unfolds through environmental storytelling, NPC dialogues, and radio communications. Freeman never speaks a word, allowing players to fully immerse themselves in the protagonist's perspective. The arsenal ranges from conventional firearms to experimental weapons like the Gauss Gun developed within Black Mesa itself.
The game was released on PC, Mac, and Linux, supporting both single-player and multiplayer modes. Over the years, the community created countless modifications, some of which — like Counter-Strike — evolved into standalone franchises. Half-Life's influence on the industry remains immense, establishing new standards for narrative design in the FPS genre.
