About the game
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision in 2007. It is the fourth main entry in the series and the first to move the setting from World War II to the modern day. The campaign is split between two protagonists: British SAS Sergeant John 'Soap' MacTavish and US Marine Sergeant Paul Jackson.
The plot revolves around terrorists attempting to seize nuclear weapons in the Middle East. Players participate in night raids, tank battles, sniper missions, and urban assaults. The mission 'All Ghillied Up' deserves special mention — a legendary episode where Captain Price and MacTavish hide in tall grass within meters of an enemy convoy. The campaign avoids patriotic black-and-white presentation: it shows command errors, civilian casualties, and soldiers' moral dilemmas.
The multiplayer mode became one of the main reasons for the game's success. A progression system unlocking weapons, perks, and camouflages earned millions of fans. Modes include team deathmatch, capture the flag, search and destroy, and a zombie mode. Cooperative play and split-screen are supported on consoles. Maps are designed for different playstyles — from close-quarters combat on streets to sniper duels on open terrain.
The game was released on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Mac. A remaster with improved graphics was released in 2016. Modern Warfare set standards for military shooters for decades to come and remains a genre benchmark.
